Just watching GMTV while having my morning cuppa- an article saying that research in America has shown that women who drink 4+ cups of tea a day are at greater risk of developing RA!!
No links with coffee though. Hmmmm............
Didn't catch much of it but no doubt there will be something later or on their website.

I'm never sure about these things but I do drink a lot of tea- always have!

That was my first thought too Ray,

After a quick google it seems the research has been produced at this years Eular conference that is currently going on in Rome

http://www.eurekalert.or...0-06/elar-wwc061710.php

Our own Prof Emery has commented on the findings

Quote:
"These are very interesting findings and we hope that additional research will investigate this topic further. We do assert the need for caution in the interpretation of these findings as no strong causation effect has been confirmed, and encourage patients with rheumatic diseases to consult their physician before making any significant changes to their diet or caffeine intake" said Professor Paul Emery, President of EULAR and arc Professor of Rheumatology, Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Leeds, UK

I don't function properly without quite a few cuppa's every day! Smile

I agree with Jo; I need my cuppa's; I don't drink coffee so tea is my saviour - although I do drink fruit teas as well - especially during the afternoon.

A slightly wider search reveals that greater amounts of alcohol consumption is associated with a reduced risk of developing RA!! So that's where we have all been going wrong then ... swap your cuppas for a large glass of your favourite tipple!!

Actually, I didn't come across anything which linked continued tea drinking to RA severity, so I'm not sure what use the research really is. Like we said a couple weeks ago over another GMTV arthritis 'news' article, there is nothing we all did to cause or deserve this (though it makes it a little bit harder to accept everyone else's advice with a kindly smile after these sorts of news reports!)

Well I only drink herbal teas and the odd cup of green tea. I have never drank the other stuff and I still got RA. Bah humbug I say.

Did any of you see the research out yesterday re alcohol consumption and RA http://www.arthritisrese...nked_to_lower_risk.aspx
They claim drinking alcohol can lower the rish of getting RA. Well I used to drink alcohol (not loads but enough) and I still got RA. May be I should have been drinking more of the stuff.

Hi I have heard this too if you had drank more alcohol your chances of developing RA were much lower. We all know what we should have done then or so they claim. Smile

I like a glass of wine. Can I not have a few glasses over the week end or
will it upset me liver and then be taken of a DMARD again.

Any one else drink on Leflum ?

It might raise risk of RA but it does have some benefits.

Quote:
Drinking several cups of tea or coffee a day appears to protect against heart disease, a 13-year-long study from the Netherlands has found.

I won't give up tea but I do just have one in the morning and one at night these days, plus a sneaky one in between sometimes...
I just have to have one to start the day ~ anything else just won't do and well ~ it's a bit early for wine!!!

I love my tea. I believe that developing RA is down to chronic stress. I read several articles that there is a linik to prolong stress to inflammation in the body. So relax have a cuppa BigGrin
